Yayoi Kusama is a world renowned contemporary artist known for her work with polka dots! To Kusama, polka dots represent infinity as they are repeated throughout nature in various forms. In this lesson, students will create their own polka-dotted pumpkins inspired by Kusama’s sculptures.

This 10 page lesson plan includes:

  1. A biography on the life and work of Yayoi Kusama to share with students

  2. Guided questions to use for inquiry-based discussion

  3. Step-by-step instructions with visual examples demonstrating each step of the lesson

  4. Grade-level standards for 3rd + 4th grades

  5. Ways to extend this lesson and build in written and verbal reflection

This lesson can easily be adapted to virtual teaching! Have students color the background with colored pencils instead of watercolor, and use markers to dot the pumpkins instead of acrylic.
