Amy Sherald is a contemporary portrait painter based in Baltimore, Marlyand. Sherald gained international attention for her portrait of First Lady Michelle Obama. In this lesson, students will learn how to draw a self-portrait using accurate facial proportions. They will use mixed media to create their self-portrait in the style of Amy Sherald.

This 7 page lesson plan includes:

  1. A biography on the life and work of Amy Sherald to share with students

  2. Guided questions to use for inquiry-based discussion

  3. Step-by-step instructions with visual examples demonstrating each step of the lesson

  4. Grade-level standards for grades 5+6

  5. Ways to extend this lesson and build in written and verbal reflection

This lesson can easily be adapted to virtual teaching! Instead of providing students with pre-made patterned paper, have students create their own patterned paper using colored pencils to draw designs of their choice.
