Midwest-based artist, photographer and filmmaker, Jason Lindsey uses his voice to bring awareness to a multitude of environmental challenges, with a focus on climate change. Jason’s current series, Cracks in the Ice, was influenced by his son, who has began voicing his own concern for the future of the world and the environment. Jason’s work speaks both upon the beauty of the natural world, and the importance of preserving it for future generations.

How did your creative journey begin?
My creative journey started at a very young age, as I was constantly drawn to artistic endeavors such as drawing, painting, and building. I was lucky enough to have a supportive family, specifically my mom and grandma, who encouraged and nurtured my passions from the beginning. This early foundation set the stage for my ongoing journey as a creative individual.

Where do you find inspiration for your work?

I find inspiration for my work from a variety of sources. Initially, I was inspired by the natural world's beauty. However, as I progressed through college, I became more interested in people and how they interact with their environment.

This led me to focus on environmental challenges, specifically climate change and water, for the last decade. I am particularly fascinated by the intersection of these two worlds of people and the environment and how they influence one another.

How has your work shifted and evolved over time?

Over the years, my art has evolved and grown with me. When I started, I was primarily concerned with creating and portraying the beauty around me. As I have matured and my interests have evolved, the concept behind my work has become increasingly important to me. For the past 15 years, I have been particularly drawn to telling more profound stories about climate and water issues. In the last two years, I have also begun focusing on diversity and inclusion in the natural world through my art.

What does a typical day in the studio look like for you, and how has your art practice grown or changed?

As an artist who often works in the natural world, my days can be unpredictable. I am most inspired by the atypical days when I am braving a snowstorm or diving into the water to capture a unique perspective. When I am not out in the field, I spend my days in the studio preparing for my next adventure or refining my artwork. While my art practice has always been centered around the natural world, I have grown and changed as an artist over the years, continually seeking out new and exciting ways to explore and capture the beauty of the environment.

Which experiences have impacted your work as an artist?

One of the most impactful experiences in my career as an artist has been the birth of my son and the realization of the kind of future he will inherit. As he has grown and started to ask questions about climate change and its effects on the world, it has driven me to use my art to raise awareness and inspire action on these critical issues.

How has social media impacted your art career?

One of the most significant impacts of social media on my art career is the connections and relationships I have formed with other artists. Through platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn, I have connected with fellow creators and engaged in meaningful conversations and collaborations.

What are your future goals and aspirations?

In the future, I plan to continue using my art to raise awareness and inspire change on issues related to the natural world and climate change. My goal is to create work that challenges people's perceptions and encourages them to think more deeply about their place in the world and how they can make a positive impact.
