Didier Viodé: Portraits of the Unseen

Based in Paris, France, artist Didier Viodé is known for his captivating portraits. From the Black Lives Matter movement to the COVID outbreak, Didier finds solace and introspection in portraiture.

Tell me about your background and where your creative journey began.

I have been drawing since my childhood… After my baccalaureate, I studied art in Abidjan in Ivory Coast, then completed my training at the School of Fine Arts in Besançon in France. I am a multidisciplinary artist who touches everything (paintings, photos, drawings ...)

Where do you find inspiration for your work?

I find my inspiration in North / South relations, as well as people, the media and everything that concerns me.

What led you to focus on portraiture?

I have always worked on the figure. But in March 2020, from the first Covid-19 confinement in France, I focused on my self-portrait. I needed to escape, and do a pictorial introspection on myself.

How have your paintings shifted and evolved over time?

I often work in series. When I start a new series, I weave it with the previous one. My art is contextual. My painting, initially abstract, has become figurative. The hectic world news, and the Black Live Matter events, comfort me in the representation of self-portraits and portraits of unseen. My art frees itself and asserts itself.

What does a typical day in the studio look like for you, and how has your art practice grown or changed?

In the workshop, I improvise. I look for my subjects on the internet or in my

memories ... I don't have a pre-established work ritual. Often I listen to the radio while working. My artistic practice evolves according to the subjects and the medium used. The more time passes, the more refined my work becomes.

Which experiences have impacted your work as an artist?

Living and working in a foreign country, my immigrant experience influences my work. In France, I am perceived as an African artist, yet I do everything to remain just an ARTIST, without a label.

How has Instagram impacted your art career?

Instagram made me curious, curious to discover new artists and sometimes incredible works. Instagram has boosted me and allows me to be visible anywhere in the world.

What are your future goals and aspirations?

Since my childhood, I have always created. Art is part of my daily exploration. I hope to continue this noble task, and succeed in capturing the beauty of the world.
