Sunny Altman

Painter based in Huntington Beach, California

ABOUT

Sunny Altman was born and raised in Southern California. Sunny was creatively driven from an early age. She spent most of her childhood obsessively pursuing creative endeavors and feverishly honing her drawing and painting skills. Her creative obsession has remained a constant passion and practice throughout her life. With a deep affection for the Golden State, she planted her roots in Huntington Beach, California. She shares in the joys of beach living and surf culture with her husband and their two sons in a beach cottage, where she works from her home studio, looking out into her garden. As a lifelong Californian, she draws inspiration from the natural beauty of the diverse sun-drenched California landscape and the tapestry of rich and saturated colors, radiating from the reflections of light. Sunny also draws inspiration from the collective human experiences that can’t be seen and life’s simple pleasures. As an Art educator, former kindergarten teacher, and mother to school age children, she is especially drawn to the wonder and joy through a child’s perspective. She works in various mixed media, including; graphite, ink, gouache, acrylic paint, watercolor paint, gold leaf, pastels, collage and an occasional sprinkling of glitter. When Sunny isn’t working in her studio you can often find her cheering on her sons at their sporting events, walking along the beach, practicing yoga and cooking. She also enjoys spending weeks at their vacation home on Cape Hatteras Island, where the days are spent salty and sandy and it is perfectly reasonable to watch the sun rise and set from the same beach chair.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Painting is always where I come home to myself and open my heart to conscious dreaming. Where I hear the whispers of my soul nudging me. As an intuitive painter, I paint in a meditative flow. Using mixed media, each mark leads to another, layering marks and textures, giving the painting rich, saturated pigment and depth. There is a specific energy and feeling I tap into with each piece of work When I paint, I take time to honor moments of reflection, allowing room to grow, moving through the transitions of the painting. I like to take time to explore a concept in great depth; I immerse myself in the idea, through research, travel, books, music and experimentation. I spend years developing a body of work, interweaving ideas and concepts, while working on multiple series of paintings in unison. Currently, I have three ongoing series of paintings: Divine Feminine, Dream Garden and Earth & Sea. Although the work is compartmentalized into three separate series, they are all related, through my use of color, imagery and in the commonality of expressing my love and adoration for Mother Earth and the beauty and light in humanity. My work is an expression and devotion to the preservation of our natural resources as well as bringing awareness to racial, social and gender inequality. My intention is to spread a joyful awareness through my paintings, inspiring positive change. My work is intended to be a reminder that each new day is full of enormous possibility, to linger in the heartfelt moments and to be a seeker of light.
