ABOUT

Lauren Knollmeyer’s work explores the concept of balance, weaving together themes of nature, motherhood, and mental health. An engineer turned visual artist and mother,  Knollmeyer strives to balance these often-conflicting identities, regularly finding refuge in nature and memory. She now paints these moments of reflection in the form
of landscapes and portraits. Knollmeyer currently lives and works in Seattle, WA. She is a self taught oil painter who paints in a technical style informed by her engineering
background. Her work has appeared in solo exhibitions at the Bellevue Library and Overlake Medical Center in Bellevue, WA as well as juried group exhibitions throughout
Washington State. She has an upcoming solo exhibition at Overlake Medical Center as well as a group exhibit at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute in New York.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I’m interested in how we find balance. For me, that means somehow creating a loving home for my children while still having an engineering career, an art practice, and time for rest. Though it feels impossible, I find that being in nature brings me closest to the mental balance we all crave. That is why my work explores the wild places: capturing the fleeting peace to be found there through landscapes and portraits. Like the time spent carefully exploring the natural places of the world, my oil paintings come together slowly. They are made of many thin layers of glaze, built up over weeks into a cohesive whole. The effect is luminescent and soft, creating dream-like landscapes and portraits that feel like a memory. In a world so focused on hustle and comparison, my work remains a quiet invitation to slow down and reflect. To seek the moments that are the most healing and important.
