ABOUT
Brooke Sauer grew up moving around the United States and landing in Los Angeles,CA to study fine art at Otis College of Art and Art Center College of Design. As an avid hiker and backpacker, her experiences in nature have inspired her current artistic practice. Previously part of the collaborative duo B&T for over a decade, Brooke returned to her solo practice in 2015 with a new voice informed by her experience as a painter, video and performance artist, and photographer.
ARTIST STATEMENT
With these works I celebrate the natural world by reflecting on our symbiotic connection to it. My artwork combines aspects of painting, printmaking, and alternative photographic methods. I integrate science and art by combining a very old photographic printing process, called cyanotype, with my background in painting and my love of botany and the outdoors. Many of my prints incorporate pressed plants that I collect while hiking, reflecting a sense of place inspired by my personal experiences in nature. I portray our relationship to landscape as both a physical and metaphorical terrain to contemplate and protect; encouraging viewers to explore their own internal landscape as they interact with and observe nature.
